The much needed Treasure; Mombasa Port
Kenya's marine and shipping industry has undergone a transformation since 1896 with the first construction at Kilindini; the Mombasa port. The industry has grown diverse and has brought economically viable sectors in the region and country at large.
An environmental impact assessment study was done in 2006 which proposed a construction of a container terminal at Mombasa port. The project was to bring about improved infrastructure that will open economic growth and increase business opportunities in the area, create employment opportunities and improve the economy of the region and country at large due to greater competition of the port with international maritime industry. These being perceived as the positive impacts of the port, it did not leave behind the negative ones which will live to hinder the residents despite the relief. The project was to lead to; loss of residential property, loss of fishing grounds, noise and safety risks.
KPA handles a variety of cargo including liquid bulk items like petroleum, oil and lubricants. Without these Kenya's economy will grind to a halt. Other types of heavy cargo include, maize clinkers, wheat, iron and steel. Food which is much needed in Mombasa county as they don't have farms to cultivate any, is essential and the materials for building, all contributing to the growth of the county and country at large.
KPA maintains, develops the infrastructures and delivers services to customers. It owns the Bandari staff clinic for treatment of its employees, provides housing and security and also a college to it's staff. This has helped a lot to lift the burden up of the residents of Mombasa. By providing the basic needs of the people of Mombasa gives an opportunity to a better living and a stable economy to the county and country. KPA is a profit earning parastal that Kenya wouldn't dare to lose.
