Think Green, Save the Earth

Ever since climate change has been a calling to all people for the sake of our country's future, however few heed to the call. Plastics being the number one enemy of environment, can take up to a thousand years to fully decompose thus need to be disposed properly. The environment and climate are important for everyone to care.

Plastics contribute to climate change in the following ways, In it's lifecycle it creates green house gas emissions, plastics are made of fossils therefore culprit of carbon emissions. Problems caused by plastics are many from blocked drainages and chocking rivers to carbon dioxide emitted in the process of burning them, hence polluting the environment in everyway making it more less safe for human. Studies show that by 2050 we will be having more trash than fish in our oceans.

PET-a type of plastic used in the manufacture of plastic bottles and food containers is released into the market in 60,000tonnes per year, in form of plastic bottles for water, juice, cooking oil, utensils and then they are disposed anywhere, you can imagine how much trash we have per year.  Nairobi produces the largest amount of trash in a day, but a very small section of it is being collected and disposed off properly according to a report by NEMA- National Environment Management Authority.

Plastic as materials are good but how are managed in the environment, that's where the problem lies. Plastics have played an important role of enabling products to be sold at an affordable price.

In 2017, the Kenyan government issued a ban on all plastics, followed by a 2020 ban on all single used plastics in protected areas. But ironically the trash continued to threaten the environment. Effects of climate change like drought, which is affecting food production. Its important to separate organic and inorganic waste, this makes it easier to recycle waste. Dispose off waste responsibly and if you don't know how to fix it, don't break it.
