TUM PRESIDENT ELECT SPEAKS.
Technical University of Mombasa 's President elect Kelvin Songa has applauded the university for the immediate closure of the institution following chaos that marred the better part of Wednesday, saying that under such circumstances,it was the right thing to do.Speaking to Al shifaa Radio this morning after University Election Commission (UEC) declared him winner of the polls in which his competitors boycotted ,urged calm among the students even as tectonic forces continue shaking the university.
Mr Songa's victory led to demos from a section of students who are believed to be his opponents.Messages seen by NewsClinton circulating in WhatsApp groups showed that the agrieved parties believe the elections were not conducted in a free and fair manner.
"Due to a lack of transparency in the just concluded delegates elections, we call upon all comrades to assemble at Buxton point at exactly 8:00 am. No one has the monopoly to decide our union leaders for us. The will of comrades must be protected at all costs.Tag along friends!,"read the message In one of the WhatsApp groups.
Mr Songa defended his bid to contest for the just concluded polls saying he met all the requirements of the TUMSA CONSTITUTION including one that requires a candidate to be at least two semesters old.Mr Songa's candidature drew huge criticism from his opponents as he is expected to finish studies next year July, meaning there will be around 3 months that he will not be an active student,a claim he refuted saying a student ceases to be a student on graduation day.
In a warning shot to his main opponent Dan sichei Mr Songa urged him to defer if in any case he is tired of studies adding that there are proper channels to be followed in case of elections dispute.According to article 43 of the TUMSA constitution a candidate can lodge a petition if he or she has reason to believe or has evidence that there has been a contravention of any election procedure or rule during the election period.
Mr Songa dismissed claims that he is a puppet of the administration saying he has never talked with the Vice Chancellor neither does he have her phone number.
"I have only talked to the dean of students and the security officers.I only talk to them depending on the issues at hand," said Songa.
Out efforts to get a response from Dan Sichei went futile as his phone was off.
Yesterday the UEC conducted elections amidst tension giving Mr songa's alliance a win of 35 votes with 22 delegates abstaining from the vote. The future of the University remains uncertain with very minimal activities taking place in the institution as of Thursday. The university was for the first time in Five years closed due to demonstrations with sources familiar to the plan revealing that the Senate board will decide on reopening dates next week.
